Ludlow Choral Society's winter concert is titled Sotto Il Maestro ‘Under the Master’.
Following the choir's venture across the Atlantic to explore American choral music in its summer concert, it returns to more traditional choral repertoire with music from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The programme brings together works by Antonio Salieri and three of his famous students, Schubert, Beethoven, and Liszt. Unfairly portrayed in the film Amadeus as an incompetent rival and the murderer of Mozart, Salieri was in fact a celebrated composer and a generous teacher who collaborated with Mozart and promoted his works.
The programme opens with Salieri's Coronation Te Deum, composed in 1790 for the coronation of Leopold III as Holy Roman Emperor, but still relevant to us especially in this coronation year. The other major work is Schubert's Mass No.4 in C, written in 1816, when Schubert was just 19, for the Lichtental Parish Church in Vienna, which became known as the Schubertkirche.
Shorter pieces include Beethovens Elegischer Gesang and some of his Schottische Lieder. Commissioned by a Scottish folksong enthusiast, the draft manuscripts were smuggled back and forth across the Channel during the Napoleonic wars.
The programme includes a surprise piece, not linked with the overall theme. Come to the concert to find out what it is!
Tickets £15 (18 and under free) from Ludlow Assembly Rooms box office HERE.
If you are interested in joining the choir, new members are always welcome. There are no auditions and there is plenty of support for new or returning singers. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in term time at Ludlow Methodist Church. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
