Our Spring programme draws on Lenten and Easter themes and juxtaposes well known choral favourites with a much newer work by contemporary composer, Paul Mealor.

Paul Mealor has been described as ‘the most important composer to have emerged in Welsh choral music since William Mathias’ (New York Times, 2001). Crucifixus — Six meditations on the prophecy and passion of our Lord — was commissioned by the sound Festival, and premièred by the National Youth Choir of Scotland, the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Futures Ensemble with baritone soloist Jeremy Huw Williams, conducted by Christopher Bell at St Machar Cathedral, Aberdeen on 11th November 2012.

The text includes a passage from the book of Isaiah, a traditional Catholic prayer, Phineas Fletcher's famous ‘Drop, drop, slow tears’ and poetry by Peter Davidson. Interspersed with the choir's English text are Latin words sung by the baritone soloist; these are taken from Bible verses inscribed at the base of the angel sculptures on the Ponte Sant'Angelo (Bridge of Angels) in Rome.

The second half features three well known anthems by British (or Anglo-Irish in Stanford's case) composers and finishes with Vaughan Williams's well-loved Five Mystical Songs. Vaughan Williams set poems by the Welsh-born, Anglican priest George Herbert, from his 1633 collection The Temple: Sacred Poems. Whilst the first four movements are more personal, the final movement, Antiphon, is a rousing hymn, often performed separately as Let All the World in Every Corner Sing.
