Henderson Hall, Moor Park, SY8 4DZ

Sarah Fox: soprano
Susie Allan: piano
Oliver Cotton: narrator
Penny Downie: narrator

This narrated recital, devised and written by Henrietta Bredin, explores the relationship between Richard Strauss and his wife Pauline. Strauss wrote many of his greatest songs with her voice in mind and the fascinating and witty narrative is interspersed with a number of these works.

Sarah Fox is an operatic soprano who has performed roles for many opera houses in Britain and abroad including the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne.

Susie Allan is a piano accompanist, mainly of vocalists including the baritone Roderick Williams with whom she has a long-standing partnership.

Oliver Cotton is an actor, comedian and playwright, known for his prolific work on stage, TV and film.

Penny Downie, who takes the spoken role of Pauline, is an Australian actress with a long career of roles in British theatre, films and television.

The strength of the piece as a whole lay in the way the narrative provided background to the songs bringing real emotional and dramatic links between music and the story of the Strauss's marriage ... the best sort of entertainment, in which we were both diverted and informed, with all the performers helping to reveal the remarkable characters behind Richard Strauss's songs.
