Spem in Alium — music in 40 parts

Friday 19 July 2019 at 6:00pm

St Laurence, Ludlow

The Ludlow Summer School

Conductor: Gabriel Crouch, Director of Choral Studies, Princeton Unversity

Thomas Tallis: Spem in Alium
Alessandro Striggio: Ecce Beatem Lucem
Anon: The Ten Commandments

Spem in Alium, Thomas Tallis's tour de force of complex polyphony and shifting tone colours, has rightly become one of the best known musical works of the Renaissance. The concert will also include two other examples of 16th century musical gigantismo: Striggio's Ecce Beatam Lucem and an anonymous setting of the Ten Commandments. The summer school choir will sing these works round the periphery of the nave of St Laurence's, providing a profound and moving experience for the audience. The Ludlow Summer School attracts early music enthusiasts from all over Europe as well as North America and Australia. Gabriel Couch began his musical career as a chorister in Westminster Abbey, where he sang a solo at the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, and gave over 900 concerts worldwide while a member of the Kings Singers.
