Duruflé Requiem and
Cantos Sagrados by James MacMillan

Friday 17 May 2019 at 7:30pm

Leominster Priory

Edge Chamber Choir

Hilary Norris: organ
Ros Crouch: conductor

Maurice Duruflé: Requiem, Op.9
James MacMillan: Cantos Sagrados (1989)

The programme will consist of two stunning and contrasting works, Duruflé's well-loved version of the Requiem Mass and a little-known dramatic piece entitled Cantos Sagrados by James MacMillan.

The Duruflé Requiem is a work of sublime beauty. It is more intense than Fauré's setting but still full of delicious harmony and plainchant references. The organist for this concert, Hilary Norris, is an extremely accomplished player and will bring the fiery and fiendish organ accopaniment to life.

The other main piece in the programme, MacMillan's Cantos Sagrados, is a work that their conductor, Ros Crouch, has wanted to perform for quite a while. “When I first heard it,” says Ros, “I was electrified by this amazing, dramatic piece. I immediately bought a copy and made up my mind that it was something that Edge had to perform. The combination of the searing, almost shouted, words about the disappeared in Latin America and the traditional religious texts sung in the background is stunning. No one ought to miss hearing this memorable music.”
