An Evening of Virtuoso Violin

Friday 21 September 2018 at 7:30pm

St Giles, Downton-on-the-Rock, SY8 2HU

Thomas Bowes: violin

Eugène Ysaÿe: 6 Sonatas for solo violin, Op.27

The distinguished violinist Thomas Bowes plays the six Sonatas by the violin virtuoso and composer Eugène Ysaÿe (1858-1931), written for his contemporary great violinists.

Ysaÿe was inspired to write the sonatas after hearing a performance of Bach's Sonata No.1 in G minor (BWV1001) by Joseph Szigeti. Wishing to emulate Bach for his own generation he composed Sonata No. 1 for Joseph Szigeti; No. 2 for Jacques Thibaud; No. 3 for Georges Enescu; No. 4 for Fritz Kreisler; No. 5 for Mathieu Crickboom; and No. 6 Manuel Quiroga, each written to suit the playing style of the dedicatee.

A year ago Thomas Bowes performed the Bach Sonata No.1 at St Giles. This is a chance to hear him play these rarely performed virtuoso works in this most beautiful of settings.

Interval refreshments available.

Concert proceeds in aid of St Giles church.
