Music for choir and viola

Taverner: Svyati
Bob Chilcott: Beach
John Ferguson:: Ah, Holy Jesus
Uğis Praulinš: Missa Rigensis

The first half of the concert will include music for the unusual combination of choir and viola, — including Svyati by John Taverner, Beach by Bob Chilcott and Ah, Holy Jesus by John Ferguson. Lydia Handy has a postgraduate diploma from the Birmingham Conservatoire and is winner of a number of prizes including the Sylvia Cleaver Prize for Chamber Music.

After the interval, Edge will perform Latvian composer Uğis Praulinš's Missa Rigensis, written in honour of his native city of Riga. A background of formal composition studies, combined with experience in rock bands, film and theatre music, and pioneering work with folk music, all feed in to this imaginative setting of the mass. “That the result is entirely coherent is a tribute to the breadth of Praulinš's vision,” says Stephen Layton, Gramophone.
